AF – Parks – Deep Eddy

1925

This natural swimming hole on the Colorado River is the oldest outdoor swimming pool in Texas and remains popular to this day. Opened as a public park by siblings Mary and Henry Johnson in 1902, A.J. Eilers, Sr. bought the land in 1915 and built the concrete pool and a surrounding resort. The area became known as Deep Eddy Bathing Beach and had cabins, camping, and concessions. The City of Austin bought the property in 1935 but soon after massive floods destroyed the bathhouse. It was rebuilt a year later by the Works Progress Administration. The Pool is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
