Adaptive Equipment

Public computers at the Austin Public Library have JAWS software to navigate through pages using audio. Library staff is not able to offer JAWS training or instruction. The public computers also have Magic, a screen magnifier. Customers need to log on to the adaptive image to use Jaws and Magic. The Faulk Central Library has a computer set up with a scanner and Kurzweil 10.01 software to have text converted to speech. A stand-alone Kurzweil Reading Edge reading machine is available at the Faulk Central Library and at the Austin History Center. Magnifying equipment is available at the Faulk Central Library.

Computer Training

Computer classes in a variety of topics are offered each month at the Carver, Little Walnut Creek, Ruiz, and Faulk Central libraries.

Computers/Internet Access

All Austin Public Library locations have public computers with Internet access. These computers also have Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Access. Sign-up in person to search for information or to use e-mail. For more information:

Meeting Rooms

All branch libraries and the Austin History Center have meeting rooms for public use.

New Immigrants Centers/English as Second Language (ESL)

ESL videos, audio cassettes, and software are available for use at the Cepeda, Little Walnut Creek, Ruiz, Southeast Austin Community, St. John's, Terrazas and University Hills New Immigrants Centers.

Photocopiers & Printers

All Library locations have printers and photocopiers available. Photocopies cost 20¢ per page. Printers are networked to computer workstations allowing the user to print out Web pages and other documents as needed. The fee is 20¢ per page for each black and white print. Color prints are $1.00 per page. Color printers are available at the Faulk Central Library, Little Walnut Creek Branch, Ruiz Branch, and St. John Branch.Customers may not bring their own paper in for use in the copiers or the printers.

Scanner

Two scanners are available at the Faulk Central Library for public use. Images can be e-mailed or saved to a floppy disk, CD-R, CD-RW, or USB media.

Reservations for group tours of the Central Library can be made by calling (512) 974-7400. Librarians will be happy to discuss your tour needs when you call.

Typewriters

The Faulk Central Library has one typewriter for public use.

VICTORY Tutoring

Volunteers In Communities Tutoring Our Responsible Youth (VICTORY) is a partnership between the City of Austin and the Austin Independent School District to provide free tutoring for students in grades 1-12. Contact Corrina Noriega at (512) 974-7317 or see the VICTORY web site.
