APL’s Most Popular Titles of 2019 (Summary)

How do we read what Austin read in 2019? Altogether the library’s most popular titles of the year encompass a medley of characters and themes: the Marsh Girl, the Dog Man, the Dragon Doctor, the Hate U Give In Real Life, the Subtle Art of Becoming Yourself, Fires Everywhere.

Okay, they’re more like a mishmash of competing fictions and nonfictions, the world as it could be versus the world as it is. These titles are also a resounding reminder that Austin’s appetite for library-collected content is alive and well as we enter the third decade of the twenty-first century.

In 2019 the Austin Public Library’s registered cardholders numbered around 727,000, equivalent to about three-fourths of Austin’s population. People visited all library locations about 3.6 million times and cardholders checked out physical items about 5.6 million times.

The library contained about 1.2 million items. Here are 70 items that cardholders borrowed the most this year.
