Austin Public Library facilities and the Austin History Center will be CLOSED Saturday, May 25, through Monday, May 27. Recycled Reads, the Austin Public Library’s used bookstore, will be open Saturday and Sunday, but will be closed on Memorial Day.

Asa, a new voice from Africa

At the Faulk Central Library we decided to revamp our World music section and added a lot of music from Africa just recently.  In the process of finding the most representative African artists that were missing in our collection, Asa, a new voice from Nigeria came to our attention.  

Asa grew up between Nigeria and France. She had the passion for singing since she was a child.  Her distinctive style and voice made it harder for her to succeed as a singer in her native Nigeria but little by little she was able to succeed.  Under the wing of a good producer, she was able to enjoy the freedom to write and compose her own music.   When a teenager, Asa says she was very different from everybody else, and it was hard for her.  As a musician, you can also see that she is one of a kind.  Her melodies, arrangements and lyrics written both in English and Yoruba are very unique and beautiful.
