Shoemaking is an age old profession. Some cobblers pass down their lifelong trade to apprentices. Johann, the shoemaker in Literature Live’s latest story has the assistance of elves.

Everyone needs shoes, but most people don’t know how to make them. The craft of shoemaking has evolved over 40,000 years. From sandals to sneakers, high heels to designer Nikes, boots for war, tennis shoes and house slippers to keep those tootsies warm, we all depend on our shoes! Whether it is a trade, an art or a craft, we all are invested in the art form. For inspiration, check out books on shoes from our shelves.

Join us for The Elves and the Shoemaker running from November 2 through December 15. To wet your appetite, enjoy our video version of the story, told with puppets.

For a fun project during this holiday season, grab a toilet paper tube, print and decorate the pattern below, and make your own elf puppet.
