Recently one of my colleagues wrote about what to read while you were waiting for the latest installment of Game of Thrones. Because, seriously, there is no denying it, we are all waiting on Game of Thrones in one way or another. I’m not only waiting for the 3rd season to come out on DVD, but I’m also on tenterhooks waiting for the newest book in the series to come out (I mean, what happens next??? Will Arya leave Braavos? And will she run into Tyrion? Will the Khaleesi ever make it overseas? What about John Snow???).
Aubrey had some great suggestions for what to read in the interim and I wanted to add one more to the list: Megan Whalen Turner.
Simply put, Megan Whalen Turner's Queen’s Thief series is amazing. These books are chock-full of complicated and intricate storytelling where the story is repeatedly turned on its head with amazing plotting. These books are full surprises and humor and much less violence – so younger readers (provided they are strong readers) can enjoy them too.
You’ve got thievery, court intrigue, mythology (which is a bit, how should I say it...well…perhaps a bit misleading), secret plots, and characters that will stay with you long after the books end. Set in a world very much like ancient Greece, the first book introduces us to Eugenides. A young man who has been freed from the Queen of Attolia’s prison because he is needed for a secret mission and he has widely claimed that he can steal absolutely anything (obviously not always without getting caught).
Each book is told from a different character’s point of view which keeps the overarching series fresh and interesting. I guarantee that when you finish the last book in the series you’ll be waiting as anxiously for the next installment as I am. But by then Game of Thrones will be back on, so you won't feel it too much!
These books are also available in the downloadable collection.
