Civil Disobedience

Occupy Wall Street is facing winter, and the weather in the northeast has been as extreme in its way as ours has been in Texas. It's a good bet winter will be deep at Zuccotti Park--it's already been early. Will the protesters persevere? Do they need to? Have they already changed the conversation? Because of them, are we talking about meeting the needs of the undercapitalized in a capitalist country?

The Traveling Librarian Cruises

My husband and I went on a cruise out of Galveston a few weeks ago. I'm not sure I liked it. The ship was very Las Vegas, only tackier, if that's possible, the food was just so-so, and everywhere we turned we were exhorted to buy something. The cabin was nice (stay out of the mini-bar); friends advised us to spring for a balcony and they were right.

Horror… in Other Lands

I know this is a busy month for you, trying to come up with the perfect Halloween costume,  planning the best Halloween party, or carving the most amazing  jack-o-lantern.  Oh yes, this is a month with lots of fun things to do!! But if you have the time, and want to get in the Halloween mood , why not pause for an hour or two and watch a scary movie?

The Literate Pooch

I weed the dog-training books and you would not believe how many of them have tooth marks on them! I'm sure the cookbooks have food on them, the art books probably have paint on them, the car-repair books have oil all over them, and tears streak the pages of the poetry books... I'll leave it there; you get the idea.

Trying hard to do...NOTHING

"The tree on the mountain height is its own enemy.
The grease that feeds the light devours itself.
The cinnamon tree is edible: so it is cut down!
The lacquer tree is profitable: they maim it.
Every man knows how useful it is to be useful.

No one seems to know
How useful it is to be useless."

-Chuang Tzu

Pride!!

Tomorrow, the GLBT community in Austin will be celebrating Gay Pride.

Recently, I learned by serendipity about the death of Rudolf Brazda, one of the few survivors of Nazi concentration camps where he and other gay men had to wear a pink triangle attached to their uniforms denoting their sexual orientation.

27 Club

Unfortunately, the British singer Amy Winehouse (1983-2011) joined this club a few days ago. The 27 Club is the name used for those influential musicians that have died at the age of 27 years old.

Je ne regrette rien!

Bastille Day is now just 4 days away which got me thinking about one of the most amazing French artists of all time:  Edith Piaf.

Bloomsday!

When I was a kid my family had a pretty meager VHS collection. We did, however, own a copy of Groundhog Day which I watched over and over again, sometimes trying to count the number of times Bill Murray has to experience the same day. (It’s impossible by the way).

A book trailer???

It’s amazing, isn’t it?? We now have not only movie trailers but also book trailers as well.    Since I buy books in other languages for the Library, I’ve noticed that book trailers are more popular in European countries than in America.  Amazon France and Amazon Germany (especially) has had them for a quite a while.  There are trailers for almost every book they sell, and that’s how I got hooked on book trailers.
