Learn to Use Computers and the Internet

Come to the Austin Public Library for self-paced computer classes in a comfortable atmosphere. You’ll receive one-on-one support as you learn:

  • The basics of how computers work
  • Games to help you learn typing and mouse skills
  • How to send and check e-mails
  • How to find reliable information on the internet
  • How to keep your personal information safe
  • How to keep in touch with friends over the internet

You may start at any time throughout the year and attend one or multiple sessions to practice and gain confidence. Classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis and are limited to 8 people per session. The classes are free and open to the public. There is no registration or prerequisite to begin. A Spanish speaker is available from 12:30p.m.–2:00p.m.

Classes are a joint project of the Austin Public Library and the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas' Learner Web program.

Skit Contest Registration Opens Tomorrow!

Are you planning to enter a group in the first ever YomiCon Cosplay Skit Contest?

If so, you'll want to know that registration for Cosplay Skit Teams OPENS TOMORROW, May 1st.... and registration is limited to the first 14 teams that sign up.  

Groups who sign up after the first 14 will be placed on a waiting list and contacted if another team drops out. 

Here's what we'll need to know when you register your group:

  • A team of 2-5 people who will perform
  • A Team Leader who will be the primary point of contact for the group
  • What kind of skit you will be doing (in 2 sentences)
  • Content must be teen appropriate
  • 3-5 minute time limit per skit
  • Names and email addresses for ALL the people in your group
  • Skits will be FILMED in advance -- you will be required to sign up for a specific rehearsal/filming time
    • This time cannot be changed... so make sure you know everyone on your team's availability for our filming day, May 31st (between 10am and 3pm

So get all the details together and get ready to register tomorrow -- these spots will go QUICKLY!

Early Registration for YomiCon is Closed. Thank you for Registering!

We still have a few wristbands left... so if you still want to attend YomiCon, but haven't registered yet, please fill out a late registration form to get your wristband.

YomiCon 2012 is Friday, June 8th, from 3-8pm at the Ruiz Branch Library. For more information, go to www.yomicon.org!

Important!

  • You must register ONLINE this year to attend
  • You will receive a confirmation email within 3 days after submitting your form. If you don't , please email us ASAP!
  • Wristbands are REQUIRED for entry this year
  • Early Registration closed on April 30th. People who registered early can pick up their wristbands in May.
  • Late Registration is open until May 31st. People who register late will have a choice of three dates to pick up their wristbands during the last week in May.
  • Don't lose your wristband -- it is required for entry into YomiCon!
  • Any wristbands not picked up by June 2nd will be forfeited, and redistributed to people on the waiting list.

How to Register for YomiCon - Step-by-Step

  1. Go to www.yomicon.org
  2. Click on the button that represents you: Teen (11-17), Adult (18+), Adult with Child (Adults accompanying children under 11)
  3. Fill out the form COMPLETELY and ACCURATELY...double check your email address!
  4. If you’re under 18, have your parent type their name AND address at the bottom of the form
  5. Click submit (you'll see a confirmation screen)
  6. Wait for a confirmation email from us (takes up to 3 days - email us if you don't get one)
  7. Pick up your wristband at your chosen location on the date you got in your email confirmation.
  8. Wear your wristband and come to YomiCon on June 8th at 3pm at the Ruiz Branch Library

Celebrate National Poetry Month

Sometimes it's nice slow down and really enjoy a good poem. All the senses can be involved, and it can be breathtaking to get lost in the rhythm of the words and images. As you read, find meaning in form, question the implication of punctuation, and listen to the resonance evoked by sound. Most importantly, select a subject to suit your interests! We've listed some poetry books below that you might enjoy. And while you are online, check out the Library of Congress Poetry 180 site. A 180 poems were selected with high school students in mind.

If you have a poem you've written, or a favorite poem you'd like to read aloud, or you just want to listen to some poetry, check out Poetry in Many Voices at Recycled Reads on Friday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m.

Adult Craft Night: April Wrap-Up

We had a fantastic time last night at Adult Craft Night! Thanks to the many of you who joined us. For those of you who couldn't make it, we are happy to share the steps that we followed to sew our potholders/hot pads. Please find them below:

You will need: 2 pieces of fabric and 2 pieces of Insul-Bright insulation. The example we made is 8.5 x8.5 inches. Any size will do, last night many people opted to make circular potholders.

Place the right side of the fabric so they face together. Insul-Bright has a matte side and a shiny metallic side. Place the two matte sides together (you want the metallic side on the outside because it should always face the hot item allowing it to reflect the energy/heat back to its source).

Sew around the edge of your hot pad, leaving a 2 inch opening in one corner. Sew around three sides of your hot pad, and along 2/3 of the fourth side. Leave a 2 inch opening in one corner. This is so you can turn it right side out.

For this example we sewed diagonal lines along your hot pad. However, you can do any sort of design you would like.

Here is a more geometric design.

Before you complete your diagonal lines, insert a loop of bias tape/ribbon into the 2 inch opening. Pin it in place and then finish sewing your diagonal lines. You will then sew around the perimeter of the hot pad.

Voila!  Hot Pad complete!

Our next Adult Craft Night will be held Monday May 14th from 6:30-8:30 at the Ruiz Library, 1600 Grove Blvd. We will be making Kitchen Herb Gardens!

Make, Craft, Create: Adult Craft Night at Ruiz - April Edition

Please join us for Make, Craft, Create: Adult Craft Night at the Ruiz Branch Library. This month we will be sewing potholders. We'll have a variety of fabric to choose from and we've also made sure to purchase Insul-Bright insulation. Not only will your potholder be cute, but (probably more importantly) they will be functional!

Those that joined us last month will remember that we had a bit of a back-up while waiting for the sewing machines. This month we'll have a secondary craft - felt Peeps! Not as tasty as their marshmellow counterparts, but just as adorable and perfect for springtime decorating! These can be sewn quickly by hand.

Join us to learn a new skill in an engaging, friendly environment. All supplies provided!
