Some materials supplied. Besides the teacher’s stash, this workshop is currently supported and funded in part by Austin Public Library’s Recycled Reads and Austin’s Resource Recovery as part of Recycled Reads’ Reuse Series. Reused materials of unsellable foreign language, bird, and flower books, maps and sheet music as well as other found ephemera are some of the reuse treasures Recycled Reads is providing. You will want to ask Sam how to start your own stash of materials to continue this project at home.
Sam Beckerman describes Junk Art:
Junk Art takes Shabby Chic to another level. It doesn’t just make new stuff look old, but takes it a step further and purposefully uses old yellowed paper, leftover office supplies and junk mail to make things of beauty. They can be used on cards, tags, envelopes, “flips”, and journals.
Sam will organize and teach projects as well as the use of different tools and techniques.
For more info on Junk Journals, go to YouTube. There are many videos on the subject. A couple of channels Sam suggests:
Roxy Creations, which has “Using packaging to make scrap holders for journals” - a 45 minutes video (which she says you can skip to the good parts as you like.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRxhruwOsmI
“Her Day 10 shows a very simple project and you can fast forward a minute or two at a time and watch it in 5-7 minutes, and her Day 9 shows using book pages to make sewn envelopes.”
I've been crafting since childhood, having won ribbons in several state fairs for both sewing projects as well as paper. I’ve made wedding gowns and countless journals & scrapbooks. Also mosaics. I've taught various paper projects in my own studio and for craft groups.
Beginners and advanced crafters welcome!
This workshop series is for adults 18+ only.
Join us for making and crafting and, while you're at the Library, explore our diverse collection of DIY books!
