About the Artist
Jan received her official license to paint, a BFA in Studio Painting, at the University of Texas in 1990. The foundation of her art career began as a child when she was entranced by colors. She began what she calls her ‘real’ paintings in 1965 and this began a lifelong obsession with painting abstracts. Over the last 20 years, her work has been exhibited in and around Austin. As a co-founder of the Artists Coalition of Austin, she worked tirelessly for 10 years promoting, not only her work, but the work of hundred’s of other Austin visual artists. Jan currently paints full time at the Pump Project Art Complex in East Austin.
Artist Statement
Jan is a visual adventurer, constantly exploring and experimenting in the realm of the abstract. As an intuitive painter, she focuses on interpreting her inner and outer relationships to the world. How to make these expressions honest and relevant in a visual manner can be both daunting and exciting. In essence, her work revolves around interpreting the transient relationship of the essence of energy and freedom. She uses a rich, lush and varied palette. Her energized brushstrokes attack the canvas and enliven its surface. This process of painting requires constant decision-making and braking. Through her experience, instinct and knowledge she relates this rich and mysterious world of creation to the audience.
