Community Archives Program
The Austin History Center works with communities across Austin and Travis County to help preserve their histories. Through our Community Archives Program, we partner with individuals, families, and organizations to document stories that have often been underrepresented or missing from traditional archives.
This work is built on relationships. Community members help shape what is collected, how stories are told, and how materials are preserved for future generations.
The Community Archives Program focuses on collecting and preserving the histories of communities that have been historically under-documented in Austin and Travis County, including:
- African American communities
- Mexican American and Latine communities
- Asian Pacific American communities
Each community listed is supported by a dedicated archivist at the Austin History Center. Since it began in 2001, the program has become a global leader and model for community archives.
What We Collect
- Personal and family photographs
- Letters, documents, and records
- Oral history interviews
- Community publications
The program also supports public programs and exhibits that share a more complete and inclusive history of Austin.
Share Your History
Community Archives depend on participation. You do not need to be a historian or donate original materials to take part.
You can help by:
- Sharing copies of personal or family photos and documents Participating in an oral history interview
- Telling us about under-documented people, events, or organizations
- Connecting us with community groups
Your participation helps preserve stories that might otherwise be lost. If you would like to learn more about the program or share your history, start a conversation: communityarchives@austintexas.gov.
