Rushmore (1998)

Rushmore (1998) is the second film by Wes Anderson, marking his first commercial success and setting him on the path that has made him one of the most recognized directors of the 21st century. It also marks the beginning of Anderson’s relationship with Bill Murray, who at the time had fallen out of the public eye due to a series of poorly received films over the previous years.

Telling the story of Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a 15-year-old student at Houston’s prestigious Rushmore Academy, Rushmore finds Max competing with industrialist Herman Blume (Murray) for the affection of a teacher (Olivia Williams). With the plot of a screwball comedy and the sensibility of a moody independent film, Rushmore sets up an absurdist tone that would become the mainstay of Wes Anderson’s career.

Rushmore stars Jason Schwartzman in his first film role and Bill Murray in the role that started his relationship with Wes Anderson and introduced him to independent films. Also starring are Olivia Williams, Brian Cox, Connie Nielsen, and Luke Wilson.

Rushmore is rated R for strong language and sexual references.
