Peggy Sue Got Married (1986)
What should be a straightforward 80s romantic fantasy turns into something unexpected in Peggy Sue Got Married (1986). The direction from Francis Ford Coppola is at times on a level of arthouse cinema (pay particular attention to the scene between Turner and Cage in the basement). Add to this Nicholas Cage’s over the top acting (with false teeth) and a cast that sees Kathleen Turner sharing the stage with everyone from John Carradine and Maureen O’Sullivan to Jim Carrey (still a relative unknown).
This movie is one of the first in a string about a character becoming young again (or sometimes older). Age changing characters would show up in Hollywood movies seven times in the next three years. In Peggy Sue Got Married, Kathleen Turner, a middle-aged woman with two kids and a failing marriage, suddenly finds herself back in high school at the beginning of the relationship with Nicholas Cage’s character. Having jumped from 1985 to 1960, Peggy Sue (Turner) sets out on a path to take her far, far away from the life she had led.
Of particular delight is a very young Jim Carrey as well as the interactions between Peggy Sue and her grandparents and the antics of her grandfather’s lodge members.
Peggy Sue Got Married is rated PG-13 for Mild Language, Smoking and Drug Use, and Sexual References.
