Murder by Death (1976)

Neal Simon became one of America’s most bankable playwrights when his first play, Come Blow Your Horn, ran for over two years on the Broadway and London stages. In 1968, Simon adapted his stage hit, The Odd Couple, into a screenplay and received an Oscar nomination for his efforts. After that, Simon became one of the most consistently successful Hollywood screenwriters of the seventies and eighties with some 24 films being produced from his scripts.

Simon’s films range from zany comedies to casual dramas. With Murder by Death (1976), Simon wandered directly into one of the wildest parodies ever put on the silver screen and with one of the best casts imaginable. Even the then reclusive Truman Capote agreed to a role. In this film, we have parodies of Sam Spade, Nick and Nora Charles, Charlie Chan, Hercule Poirot, and Miss Marple.

Murder by Death stars Peter Falk, Peter Sellers, Maggie Smith, Alec Guiness, Truman Capote, David Niven, James Coco, Eileen Brennen, and Alice Walker.

Murder by Death is rated PG for Mild Nudity, Language, and Violence.
