I Love You to Death (1990)

Love can make you do crazy things. When you are married to a man, Joey Boca (Kevin Kline) who repeatedly cheats on you, it can make you want to kill him. And, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again. Rosalie Boca (Tracy Ullman) and her mother Nadja (Joan Plowright) make three attempts before enlisting the help of a young man, Devo Nod (River Phoenix), that hangs out in the family pizza parlor. Being a pacifist, he turns to two ‘hitmen’, Harlon and Marlon James (William Hurt and Keanu Reeves).

The would-be assassins manage to shoot Joey in the chest, but having already been pumped full of sleeping pills, his metabolism has been slowed down so much that he eventually wakes in the morgue with a headache and chest pains. A full recovery ensues. Arrests are made, but Joey refuses to press charges, having come to see the error of his ways.

Best part (aside from the amazing cast) is that this is all based on the true story of Tony and Frances Toto. On seeing the movie, Tony admitted that it was more accurate than he was comfortable with. Tony and Frances Toto celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in 2023.

I Love You to Death (1990) is rated R for Mild to Moderate amounts of almost everything, but comically.
