The Sunshine Boys (1975)

Tuesday, November 24 - 6:00 PM to 7:45 PM
Milwood Branch
12500 Amherst Dr.

Laurel and Hardy faded away. Abbott and Costello turned against each other. Martin and Lewis went their separate ways. Gracie died. Comedy duos once ruled the entertainment world, but life on the road and the early days of film was hard.

Based on Neil Simon’s play, The Sunshine Boys (1975) tells the story of a vaudeville comedy duo who fell on hard times and broke up bitterly. Now, one last chance on stage is presented in the form of a televised tribute to comedy legends. But can The Sunshine Boys put aside their mutual animosity long enough to get through their famous hospital sketch?

The Sunshine Boys stars George Burns in his first real role since the death of his partner and wife, Gracie Allen, and Neil Simon’s favorite actor, Walter Matthau (who had to be made up to match Burns’s age). This movie would propel Burns to a level of fame he had never had. He would star in half a dozen more movies, working opposite the likes of Gary Coleman and Brook Shields.

Starring George Burns, Walter Matthau, Richard Benjamin, and Lee Meredith.
