Bike Mechanics 101: Presented by Yellow Bike (Class 1 of 2)
A Free Series on Bicycle Maintenance
In celebration of National Bike Month, join Yellow Bike in partnership with Austin Public Library for this 2 class series on the basics of bicycle repair and maintenance.
Instructors from Austin’s Yellow Bike Project will guide participants through the tools and techniques for inspecting, adjusting, maintaining, and repairing your bike to keep you rolling. Classes will include both demonstration and opportunities for hands-on practice.
*Participants are not required to attend both classes. Feel free to only come to one or the other, or both!
Class 1: Tues June 2nd, 6:00-7:30pm
Topics will include:
- Bicycle Safety / Safe Cycling Resources
- Bicycle Anatomy
- Tires - inspection, inflation
- Flat tire - tire removal, tube replacement, patching a tube
- Chain - inspection, maintenance, and lubrication
- Seatpost and Saddle - inspection and adjustment
- Handlebars, Stem, and Grips - inspection and adjustment
- Pedals - inspection and tightening/changing
Class 2 June 16th, 6:00-7:30pm
Topics will include:
- Drive Train (derailleurs and shifters) - operating principles, inspection, adjustment
- Cables & Housing - inspection and lubrication
- Brakes - different types, inspection, minor adjustments
- Wheels - anatomy, inspection, minor hub adjustment
- Headset - inspection and adjustment
- Bottom Bracket - inspection
*PLEASE BE AWARE* Instructors are not able to give participants 1 on 1 help with their individual bikes.
