Writing to Change the Hearts

Badgerdog Writing Workshop 

We are collectively tired of the term “unprecedented times” and yet as young people, we bear the burden of what that means for our future. With intense political polarization, we are at a point where we are unable to have meaningful conversations to reach each others’ hearts. Since the beginning of time, storytelling has been a powerful tool to connect individuals who are likely to never meet otherwise. Join us for a teen writing workshop to write towards an issue you care deeply about, while utilizing the emotional components of persuasive writing (pathos), alongside strong diction and literary devices to craft masterful poems. Students will begin by journaling, and we will do a short lesson alongside a discussion that is relevant to the topic at hand. We will focus on crafting our own poetry pieces (for the page or stage) that we can perform, read or publish. At the end of this class, students will walk away with a piece of their own to workshop about a cause they care most about. 

Please register ahead of time at Eventbrite. This will be a small class, so if the event "sells out," please add your name to the waitlist. In many cases, spots will open up. 

Sara Bawany is an award-winning poet, two-time author, clinical social worker, and creative writing teacher based in Austin, TX. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Texas State University. 

The Badgerdog Creative Writing program includes workshops for all ages, classroom-based lessons, and youth camps to inspire and guide our up-and-coming writers. Badgerdog is a program of The Library Foundation, which offers a range of enriching cultural and educational community programs for all ages in close partnership with the library. 

Estamos hartos de la expresión "tiempos sin precedentes", y sin embargo, como jóvenes, cargamos con el peso de lo que esto significa para nuestro futuro. Con la intensa polarización política, nos encontramos en un punto en el que nos resulta imposible tener conversaciones significativas que nos permitan conectar a un nivel más profundo. Desde tiempos inmemoriales, la narración de historias ha sido una herramienta poderosa para conectar a personas que, de otro modo, probablemente nunca se conocerían. Únete a nuestro taller de escritura para adolescentes y escribe sobre un tema que te importe profundamente, utilizando los componentes emocionales de la escritura persuasiva (pathos), junto con una dicción precisa y recursos literarios para crear poemas magistrales. Los estudiantes comenzarán escribiendo en un diario, y luego tendremos una breve lección y una discusión relevante sobre el tema. Nos centraremos en la creación de nuestras propias piezas poéticas (para la página o el escenario) que podremos interpretar, leer o publicar. Al final del taller, los estudiantes habrán creado una obra propia sobre una causa que les apasione.

Sara Bawany es una poeta galardonada, autora de dos libros, trabajadora social clínica y profesora de escritura creativa residente en Austin, Texas. Posee una Maestría en Bellas Artes en Escritura Creativa de la Universidad Estatal de Texas.  
 
El Badgerdog Creative Writing incluye talleres para todas las edades, clases presenciales y campamentos juveniles para inspirar y guiar a nuestros jóvenes escritores.
