Austin Public Library and Mayor’s Office Launch “Mayor’s USA 250 Community Read”
Citywide reading challenge encourages Austinites to read, learn, and connect to US history through July 4
Austin Public Library, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office, is launching the “Mayor’s USA 250 Community Read,” a citywide reading challenge encouraging Austinites of all ages to celebrate reading, history, and community as part of the national USA 250 commemoration marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The Mayor’s USA 250 Community Read challenges Austinites to spend 250 minutes reading books about American history before July 4, 2026 – the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Participants can track their reading through an online reading challenge platform and engage with library resources throughout the summer.
“As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, and as Austin Public Library celebrates its own Centennial year, this is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role libraries have played in American civic and cultural life for generations,” said Austin Public Library Director Hannah Terrell. “Reading has the power to help communities better understand their history, one another, and the world around them, and we’re excited to invite Austinites to be part of this practice through this community-wide challenge.”
“This isn't just a reading challenge—it's an opportunity to build community with other readers across Austin and reflect on our nation’s culture and progress,” stated Austin Mayor Kirk Watson. “Last fall, I launched Generation ATX, a citywide movement to make Austin the best place to be a kid. A favorite memory of growing up was reading, learning new things, hearing what others thought and sharing what I learned. It created a sense of belonging, being heard, being part of something. I think that will be particularly true as we all read about our collective history. So, join me in this challenge! I can’t wait to hear what you discover.”
While Austinites of all ages are welcome to participate in the challenge, youth participants who complete the challenge will be eligible to receive a commemorative completion certificate, available for pickup at Austin Public Library locations beginning in mid-June.
The Mayor’s USA 250 Community Read is intended to encourage broad community participation in the commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, while also highlighting the many free resources available through Austin Public Library, including books, eBooks, audiobooks, programs, and digital learning tools. Participants can track their reading minutes using Austin Public Library’s page on Beanstack. There, they can also find recommended reading lists for youth participants in English and Spanish.
