Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
It is the best book written by one of the English language’s best authors. Pride and Prejudice has been in print almost continuously since it first appeared in 1813. Few books can claim this level of consistent popularity. Even Shakespeare has fallen out of favor periodically, but not Jane Austen. This is primarily due to the quality of the writing. Austen has an ability of taking a straightforward plot and turning it into a commentary of the era in which she lived. And, interestingly enough, a commentary that still seems to hold true today.
While an obvious critique of class, gender dynamics, and marriage, ultimately what makes Pride and Prejudice work as a novel, is the sense of self discovery among the characters, particularly Elizabeth Bennet. When reading this book, pay particular attention to how Austen introduces and treats her characters. Few books of that period (or this one for that matter) develop characters as well as Austen and Pride and Prejudice.
