Orlando: A Biography

Virginia Woolf is considered one of the greatest authors of the modernist movement. She was a major influence in the emergence of stream of consciousness writing as well as an innovator in tonal and linear/non-linear narrative. She remains one of the twentieth centuries most studied authors and a driving force in second wave feminism.

Published in 1928, Orlando: A Biography is one of Woolf’s better known and more approachable works. It is also experimental in structure and narrative and for its time, groundbreaking. It tells a story that spans well over 300 years and is focused on a character that changes gender somewhere in the middle. Woolf called it the longest love letter ever written. Orlando explores ideas of love that transcend virtually any definitions of the time in which the book was written.

Orlando: A Biography runs around 300 pages. While this is considered one of Woolf’s more approachable works, it is still Virginia Woolf. The writing is rich and deep and requires a higher level of attention than most works. Take your time, pace yourself, and you will definitely be rewarded.
