Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Nearly one hundred years old, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley tells of a future where children are not born but manufactured, drugs control moods, everyone knows their place, and sex is free but everything else costs. Distraction keeps people from questioning, happiness comes from consumption, and comfort is more important than freedom. Be prepared to be called out. Read Brave New World and come for an uncomfortable discussion.
Brave New World predates 1984 by George Orwell by more than 15 years. Written before World War II, it tells of a world where capitalism and consumerism have run rampant. Society is stratified based on intelligence and technocrats rule. As one of the big classic dystopian novels, Brave New World remains amazingly prescient. Where 1984 can seem alien in its landscape, the science fiction vision of Aldous Huxley can be painfully familiar.
