The Haunting of Hill House
12500 Amherst Dr.
Shirley Jackson created the modern style of horror writing, lifting the genre firmly out of the hands of shlocky pulp rights and putting it back on the shelves of literary greats. With The Haunting of Hill House, Jackson has written what many consider to be the best haunted house story ever. Though it has been adapted to film several times, none of them have ever managed to capture the truly unnerving feel that this book carries.
What makes this book stand out against other, lesser haunted house books is the incredible attention to detail, a fantastic writing style, and how much the characters drive the plot. Like the best horror, whether of the romantic, gothic, or modern era, this book leaves more questions than it answers. And yes, that seems wrong, but it is what makes this work so unsettling and so good. Pull the blinds closed, turn down the lights, and enjoy the ride!
