Milwood Classics Book Club

Sukayu Onsen, in the mountains of Northern Japan holds the record for the most snow fall of any inhabited place on earth. It is also home to a series of volcanic hot springs. This region of small towns, hot springs, and isolation becomes the setting and inspiration for Yasunari Kawabata’s novel, Snow Country. This novel tells the story of a businessman from Tokyo repeatedly travelling to this remote region.

Kawabata would receive the Nobel Prize for literature in 1968, recognizing his themes of isolation, inaction, and loneliness. Snow Country is built upon layers of depth, often unacknowledged, and left open to interpretation. This might, in part, be due to the book being largely written in the late 1930s but finished in the late 1940s.
