Virtual Read Watch Talk
Literature purists will stand by the book. Film buffs will make a case for the movie. Either way, there is something to discuss. Take part in our movie-book club by reading and watching on your own, and then discussing the merits of each with us online.
For the month of May, APL's Read Watch Talk club will be diving into a short story from Haruki Murakami's The Elephant Vanishes (1993) collection titled "Barn Burning." This story with themes of isolation, deception, moral detachment, and good vs. evil received a 2018 film adpation from director Lee Chang-dong. While mostly based on Murakami's story, this adaptation also pulls elements from William Faulkner's 1939 story of the same name, which Murakami was inspired by while writing. It's recommended to read Murakami's story and watch the adaptation before the meeting, but feel free to do just one or add on Faulkner's story as well!
